At just 17 years old, Khanyisile Matolo found herself navigating a life-changing journey—becoming a mother while still in school. In May 2023, during her final exams, Khanyisile gave birth, a moment that would change everything. Her schoolwork was affected, and she had to drop out and repeat a grade. But this setback didn’t define her; it became the turning point that fueled her determination to build a better future for herself and her child.
Living in a household of eight people, with three unemployed adults and five children, Khanyisile’s family relied solely on her grandparent’s old-age government grant, creating a financially strained environment. As a young mother, she shouldered the responsibility of caring for her newborn, all while dealing with the emotional and educational setbacks of teenage motherhood.
To make matters worse, the father of her child, much older than Khanyisile, refused to take responsibility. Without the means to afford a DNA test, she was left to raise her child on her own. But Khanyisile refused to let these challenges defeat her.
The Champions Teen Moms Support Group was the turning point Khanyisile needed. This program, supported by Orange Babies, offered Khanyisile the chance to return to school, catch up on missed work, and prepare for her mid-year exams. Beyond academic support, Khanyisile received essential education on sexual and reproductive health, how to protect herself from HIV/AIDS, and the importance of prioritizing her education.
With the guidance of her mentors and peer support, Khanyisile was empowered to take control of her future. Today, she is more determined than ever to finish her education and create a better life for her child.
Khanyisile’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of education, community support, and resilience. It shows that with the right resources, young mothers can overcome obstacles, rebuild their lives, and achieve their dreams. Khanyisile’s journey is one of strength, hope, and the power of second chances. She’s proof that no matter the challenges, a bright future is within reach.
