Born and raised in Thembelihle by a single mother, Emelda Mmadira Shotolo faced many challenges from a young age. At 18, she fell pregnant, and after giving birth, she moved to Lehae to live with her grandmother when her mother relocated to another province.

Despite these hurdles, Emelda was determined to continue her education. Just weeks after giving birth, she returned to school, striving to finish what she had started. Today, she lives alone with her baby, relying on the child support grant for survival. Although her mother helps when she can, the financial strain is overwhelming, as her mother does not have a stable job and cannot always provide enough support for food, baby supplies, and basic needs.

However, Emelda’s journey took a positive turn with the intervention of Mount Olive Outreach Khaya Centre. Through their support, Emelda receives monthly dignity packs, cooked meals, and clothing for both herself and her baby. This ongoing support has been a lifeline, ensuring she has the essentials to thrive.

Attending the Khaya Centre’s sessions has also been a game-changer. These sessions not only provide practical resources but have helped Emelda build healthy relationships with her peers, fostering a sense of community and encouraging her to stay focused on completing high school.

Despite the difficult circumstances she faces, Emelda has set clear goals for her future and her baby’s future. With the continued assistance of Khaya Centre, Emelda is confident that she will be able to achieve her dreams, with the support of essential toiletries and food always available to her.

Emelda’s story is one of resilience, hope, and determination, proving that no matter the challenges, a brighter future is always within reach with the right support.
